Poor birds

Well, here's one that I've actually been to before. It may not turn you vegetarian, but it should certainly get you to think about some of the choices you make. I didn't quite know what foie gras was...I mean, for me, it was just a word I learnt in French class. But after checking out this website...well, I don't know, even if I hadn't tried it before I definitely don't want to now. Please check it out.

Yet, this is just one example of a choice that some people in this world make, especially when it comes to what they eat. It may not apply to all of us who haven't tried it ever, but then again, there are choices that we make that are rather similar to this., not insulting anyone, just giving you an example. Has anyone ever seen how chickens are transported, especially here in India? On the one hand you have a lorry stacked to the top with small wire cages which are packed with chickens, while on the other hand you see some "fellow" on his two-wheeler with bunches of chickens (ranging from 3-8, mind you) tied by their legs/feet, hanging upside down from his handlebar...of the vehicle, that is. And still, we go out and eat the meat of these birds whose whole lives have been about one thing and one thing only...making a delectable meal. They may not be 'ill-treated' necessarily, as many of the chicken breeders/farmers (farmers?) will be quick to point out. But then again, what sort of a life is it to be 'cooped up' in tight spaces all your life? Not to mention, some of these poultry magnates, for reasons of profitability, will 'blunt' the beaks of the birds, so that in case of hysteria and violent reactions (which would be likely if you lived like they did) they don't "damage" one another. Wow! And this is just one kind of meat...what about beef, veal, mutton, etc. Even seafood is being farmed in today's world. Where is all this headed?

Personally, I feel that a rising human population is increasing the demand for animal meat (of all kinds...can you believe they serve tiger penis soup in some parts of the world?... I mean, what's the point of 'blowing' a dead tiger anyway? What kinky bastards I tell you!). People of today are going in for a vegetarian diet, and although such diets have been in practice around the world since ancient times, the increased requirement for 'meat' seems to grow unabatedly. In a previous post I had talked about how the consumption of meat is purely to appease the greed/desires of the palate than to really eat meat to survive. This, of course, is true of some parts of the world...because there are places where it's done by people as a means of survival. Also, if doing so for survival, there is usually minimal wastage because as much of the animal that can be used is. Anyway, I just thought I'd bring this up...because it's more about a conscious decision, not for the animals we eat, but for the thing we call 'life' itself.
