The Dancer

Like the dancer,
You flit about gracefully.
Flowing hair, arms in motion,
Without a care, a poetic notion

Like the dancer,
You make heads turn.
Men in awe, mouths wide open,
As tresses fall, hearts are broken

All the world is a stage,
You dance uninhibited.
Your life, a vivid book of colors;
For every day, a new page

Now, like the dancer,
You graciously bow.
Taking leave of lonely hearts;
Never together, yet never apart

This poem came to me at a time when, well, when things were in a state of flux. It was wierd, but the image of the dancer came to me, and all of a sudden I began thinking about all the stuff that I knew and remembered about the 'temple dancers' or devadasis. Now, I must admit, I don't know a lot of details or too much background history, but there's something powerful about the place that this person held in Indian culture and literature. I was reminded of this book that I read in high school by U.R. Ananthamurthy...Samskara. And then, well, the dancer took on hues of a lover...like a forbidden love, at first, but then, as the epitome of a timeless, untouched love. Let me know what you guys think.
