A Powerful Presence...

Last night, as I was watching TV, I was greeted to a rather intense moment of advertising. The ad had Amitabh Bachan in it, and it was for the new business entity headed by Anil Ambani: The Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group. His homepage even has his resume, and while I realize that this is an effort to reach out to the public in the usual CEO-trying-to-be-simple-fellow manner, I think the effort must be appreciated in its entirety.

So, Amitabh Bachan in another television commercial. A rather insipid statement when one considers that every second advertisement features either Shah Rukh Khan or "The Big B", as Amitji is otherwise known. Yet, as I sat there and saw the phenom of Indian Cinema speak I was captivated. He started off by talking about how he first started out, and ended with how the times, and his own views/dreams had changed after having come so far in his life. I mean, I'd heard the whole spiel about how life seemed like it was one struggle after another to realize small dreams at the onset but how that changes as you moved up in life. And admittedly my Hindi skills are all but non-existent, but the gist of the message couldn't be missed. Furthermore, his astounding oratorical ability, combined with his trademark Shahenshah voice created such an engaging air that it seemed the next words out of his mouth would be gospel truth, or the like.

And then this image came up on the screen.

Initially I was a little flummoxed and started thinking, "Whaaaat?" But the moment that little idea had wormed its way into my head, it was flooded out by a quick recollection of all the things I'd heard people say about him...Anil Ambani, that is. I'd heard all sorts of tidbits of information about how he had a more public image than his brother Mukesh, and went to some lengths to promote himself and the Reliance brand. Then there was that whole deal with the brothers splitting the company between them last year. But that hasn't seemed to stop The Reliance Group from reaching new heights.

And in that respect, I guess the ad with Amitji was just a natural step forward. If you haven't seen it yet you have me. Or maybe it's just the way that things in my head seemed to accentuate the overall effect. Either way, it's still worth the watch...and I have to say too bad it wasn't an ad for something I could pick up at the supermarket because if it was I'd have been out the door and cramming my shopping cart full of it halfway through the next commercial! WOW!

As it turns out, there's even a bit of news that talks about Amitji "being roped in" to endorse the brand. But if I don't stop now I could go on and on...
