About Me (Extended)

Thank you for visiting my blog. My name is Rohin Kallat and thus far in my life I have had the good fortune of being a Learning and Development Professional.

My career has centered around the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry here in India, with an almost exclusive focus on training in English Language Skills and Cultural Sensitivity. Having said that, however, I have also had the opportunity to work in various roles that span both the horizontal and vertical axes of the industry. For example, from working as an English Trainer and Voice Coach for a training vendor, to being part of the management of internal training teams at a couple of Multinational Corporations (Link1, Link2), my career has been endowed with a back-to-front-and-back-again aspect. This last condition is currently satisfied by the fact that I now work for a franchisee of another training vendor.

Another aspect of my career thus far is that I have had to learn and utilize skills that make me, in effect, the complete package. As I said earlier, in addition to being a trainer and working in training management, I've also been charged with the responsibility of designing curriculum and focusing on assessments of language skills as a means of validating any training intervention. True, all of this may sound a little fairytale-like, but my constant endeavor to find challenging work has enabled me to access several aspects of the BPO industry, and has allowed me to piece together a multi-faceted career.

To provide you with a brief personal profile, I was born in Thalassery (Tellicherry) Kerala, India, to Malayalee parents. I then spent the first seven years of my life in Dubai, U.A.E., where my father still works, before moving to a residential, international school in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, India. After graduating from high school, I went to college in Bangalore, Karnataka, India, and enrolled in their "University Transfer Program" from where I transferred to Hawai'i Pacific University after a couple of years, making Honolulu, Hawai'i, my home during this time. After completing my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA), with a double major in International Business and Human Resource Management, I returned to India to enter the "working world".

Given the limited international experience that I have, I find it interesting that I am less able to relate to what goes on in my own country. Having lived and worked here for a little over five years, I think it's safe to say that I am less and less enamored of the attitudes and behaviour exhibited by my countrymen. Not to consider myself unappreciative of what I have in my life, or even where I find myself, I have to admit that it's strange to live as a foreigner in your own land. Perhaps the future will bring some sort of resolution to this seeming conflict.

Finally, before I bring this self-introduction to an end, I'd like to recognize the man who I consider to be responsible for this fairytale career that I speak of. I owe all of this to a man who has been more than just a mentor to me. John Roberts provided most of the companies that he worked with a truly achievable vision. What's more, his unique combination of knowledge, skills and varied work/life experience made him a veritable "needle in a haystack". Always available to clear even the most silly doubts, John, as we affectionately knew him, is the major chunk of why and where I am today.

Once again, thank you for visiting my blog. I do hope you like what you see here, and please do leave a comment or two.
