Here's the first of a series of flower pictures that I wanted to post. Before I begin, and treating this post as a sort of introduction, there is an amazing amount of flora around Sri Vilas; some of it incidental, but most of it there because someone intended it to be there. Also, not having a specifically botanical bent of mind, I'm going to go with the names of the flowers as they've been told to me by people at home. This doesn't necessarily rule out the potential for error, of course, but it provides me with a point of reference. If anyone happens to know what the real names of these plants and flowers are, please do leave a comment. Thank you, in advance.
This particular flower is called the "ball lily" because of its shape, but it's alternate name -- thunder lily -- is a result of the circumstances involved in its blooming. As the first rains lash the state of Kerala every May/June, the resulting storms with their loud thunder claps signal to these lillies that it's time for them to bloom. The very next day, without so much as a flower bud for a warning, there they are for the world to see! Just one of the many small amazements that happen to fill my life.
