Surviving in Style

Here comes another day.
Another sun in the sky.
Time to wake up.
Stretch.
No time to start asking "Why?".

Looking around for the clan.
Not in their usual spot.
A useless delay.
Growl.
Best to get it when it's hot.

Meet them there, I guess.
Oh wait, here's Uncle Moe.
Looking weary.
Sigh.
Exhausted from his head to his toes.

It smells like a fish market.
Oh what glorious bliss!
Mackerel, sardines, you name it.
Drool.
Heaven better be like this.

More friends and family appear.
The usual crowd, plus a few.
New faces, old places.
Greetings.
Watching closely for our cues.

Pandemonium ensues.
Hands waving, voices shrieking.
Not now, I've learnt.
Wait.
Not until they start leaving.

Thirty yards further down.
No big deal, really.
Some people set up shop.
Perfect.
Target acquired already.

Little old lady, wearing red.
Cleaning some large fish.
Thwhack! Hack! Chop!
Focus.
Flying guts, my favorite dish.

The mongers have all left.
Brisk business takes its toll.
Lost in thought, licking my lips.
Think.
Time for a little stroll.

See the neighborhood in daily motion.
Ignoring a dog chasing a stick.
Meowing at strangers.
Duck!
Everyone's a critic.

That's the day taken care of.
Now back home for din-din.
Smells lovely, actually.
Purr.
Sorry, wide eyes, for the win.

Delightful, gourmet slop.
In a clean bowl. Outside.
So, what if I'm a stray?
Smile.
Got loads of feline pride.

There goes another day.
Another sun passed us by.
Time to curl up.
Yawn.
Here's to surviving in style.

Inspiration: I'd like to especially thank Sioux Roslawski for creating the spark that ultimately resulted in this poem. She commented on an earlier post and asked why I didn't write something about what the cats did when they disappear everyday between 9am and 5pm. I've given it some thought, and well, this is the result. Thank you Sioux. I hope you like it. Check out Sioux's blog, called "Sioux's Page".

Photo: The photo is of another cat that comes out back near the kitchen, and gets fed somewhat regularly. She's one of the "working cat" brigade that disappears every day from 9am to 5pm. Well, on this afternoon, she seemed to have taken an extended lunch break, giving her enough time to "pop home for a bite."
